_LES STRATÉGIES  The Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman Model For Stress Developed in 1984, Lazarus stress is defined as an “imbalance between demands and resources.” What the two researchers meant by this was that every person has resources and skills available to them. When talking about stress, these skills are known as coping mechanisms. This chapter focuses on a metatheory of stress and coping, and advances five main points. Much of what is presented here has been detailed elsewhere (Lazarus and Folkman, 1984; Lazarus, 1966; Lazarus, DeLongis, Folkman and Gruen, 1985). Nonetheless, particularly important new efforts in this area are highlighted. Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman theorized that coping could be divided based on its function, into problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping.

A short summary of this paper. According to Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) model of stress and coping, effective coping to any stressful situation, including experiencing sexism, depends on the person's cognitive appraisal of the stressful event, and the subsequent type of behavioral coping strategy used. What we term active coping is very similar to the core of what Lazarus and Folkman (1984) and others term problem- focused coping. In his 1966 book, Psychological Stress and the Coping Process (Lazarus, 1966 ), Richard Lazarus defined stress as a relationship between the person and the environment that is appraised as personally significant and as taxing or exceeding resources for coping. This definition is the foundation of stress and coping theory (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984 ). 2019-09-26 2021-04-20 An Analysis of Coping in a Middle-Aged Community Sample SUSAN FOLKMAN RIcHARD S. 2. 2012-09-02 · Lazarus and Folkman Transactional model 1. Lazarus & Folkman’s transactional model of stress & coping• Transaction (interaction) occurs between a person & the environment• Stress results from an imbalance between (a) demands & (b) resources• Thus we become stressed when demands (pressure) exceeds our resources (our ability to cope & mediate stress)• Thus the interpretation of the coping as a process implies change; one selects certain coping strategies in one situa-tion and others in another situation.
